The Sometimes Bitterness of the Working Mommy.

This week I had a meeting with a woman who left the workforce when her second son was born and the first stopped sleeping. She had a great career, an enviable career, but one day, she'd just had it and realized she wanted to be home for her kids.

Special Social Needs.

I have a friend who used to be an attorney. On Friday nights, the firm went out for drinks. She attended because her husband was available to take the kids so she could participate in this important office bonding activity. These evenings frequently lasted quite late.

Special Work Needs.

As parents who work from home while their children are present know, the juggling act can be precarious. I’ve done the standard “lock the bathroom door behind me to conduct a conference call.” I’ve also done the “crouch in the back of my van while my son attends occupational therapy.” Even “neurotypical” kids have trouble being quiet while Mom is on the phone; but this is more of a challenge for a child who makes funny noises, screeches, or panics easily.

Special Childcare Needs.

The back-to-school craziness has started to die down. Routines are established. Kids are used to their schedules. Parents finally have the drop-off and pick-up responsibilities straightened out. Everything seems to have fallen in place. But then the phone rings. It is your child’s school. Most likely, that call will be about lice, or the flu. But what if the call was to pick up your child and never return?

Am I Doing This Right?

Ah, the age-old question mothers ask themselves on a daily basis – am I doing this right? Whether it’s about disciplining tactics or sleep training or if the organic cheez-puffs are really that much better for your kids, motherhood to most is a type of training-in-progress, we learn as we go along.

How to Get Heard in a Meeting Full of Men.

There you are, one of two women in a meeting room full of men, or perhaps in a loud bar one woman among four other men -- trying, trying hard to get a word in edgewise.

Return to the Workforce with Ease.

Returning to work while you have an infant/toddler baby is most often described by moms as stressful, difficult, emotional and exhausting. How could it not be? Suddenly you're facing new challenges, having new experiences, taking on new responsibilities (above the already staggering ones you maintain as a parent).
