Working Moms on the Small Screen.

Two news items this past week focused on the increase in the number of portrayals of working moms on TV shows. A San Francisco Chronicle [1] article celebrated current shows -- such as "Desperate Housewives," "The New Adventures of Old Christine" and the new "Notes from the Underbelly" -- as evidence of a new trend in programming. "In the wake of the phenomenal success of ‘Desperate Housewives,’ network executives are learning that women, as former Rep. Pat Schroeder once put it, have a brain and a uterus, and can use both," writer Erika Milvy wrote. Meanwhile, the blog Buzz Sugar [2] identified several TV programs in development which feature, tough, strong women, including an ABC comedy called "See Jayne Run," which stars Heather Locklear as an investment banker who returns to her male-dominated workplace after having a baby as a single mom.
