A Third Gender and Career Obstacle.
Syndicated columnist Ellen Goodman [1] said that when it comes to moms in the workplace, they face not simply a glass ceiling but a maternal wall. Quoting a Cornell University study where researchers "created an ideal job applicant with a successful track record, an uninterrupted work history, a boffo resume, the whole deal," Goodman reported that the simple inclusion of work on a PTO in one’s resume negatively affected the applicant’s chances. "Moms were offered $11,000 less in starting pay than non-moms," she wrote. "And just for good measure, they were also judged more harshly for tardiness. (May 2007)
