More Carpoolers

Citing the high price of gas and children with a whole lot to do, the Associated Press reported [1] that more families are taking turns driving big vehicles in order to cart a lot of kids around when it’s their turn to carpool so the children can make it to their large numbers of activities.

The health editor at Parents magazine told AP that “[C]arpooling may be more common now because more women have re-entered the work force; fewer children walk to school and there are more extracurricular activities and sports [are] being offered at younger ages.”

Meanwhile a motor vehicle industry analyst said there are more minivans and SUVs on the market than a decade ago. “The main buyers of the vehicles are the parents with school-age children, which clearly, at that age group, carpooling becomes a factor,” he said.
