Are Career Women Penalized For Having Kids?

Wall Street Journal blogger [1] Michelle Gerdes was surprised to read about a U.S. District Court judge’s ruling against the Equal Employee Opportunity Commission’s lawsuit [2] alleging that pregnant and new mothers were discriminated against by the financial and media company Bloomberg LP: “On dismissing the lawsuit, the judge acknowledged that individuals who decide to spend more time with their families might face hurdles to advancement in the workplace. But, she added, that doesn’t necessarily equate to discrimination under the law.”

This led to Gerdes to conclude, “. . . [L]et’s be honest, when it comes to pregnancy and childbirth, it’s women who shoulder the burden. By Judge [Loretta] Preska’s logic even the most dedicated, career-driven mother is going to be penalized for taking time away from work to have a baby.”
