State Senator to Parents: If Your Kids Are Obese, You Should Pay

An Illinois state senator has floated the idea that if parents have a child who is obese, those parents should lose their $2,000 per child state income tax deduction, according to media reports [1]. “It’s the parents’ responsibility that have obese kids,” State Senator Shane Cultra told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “Take the tax deduction away for parents that have obese kids.” Lawmakers in that state are currently considering adding a penny-per-once tax on sodas, juices and energy drinks as a way to try to address the rising rates of childhood obesity in Illinois, the paper said.
