Supermodel Gisele Bundchen caused a firestorm recently when reports of her comments to Harper’s Bazaar were released in which she called for a “worldwide law” mandating that new mothers breastfeed their newborns for six months, the Boston Herald reported. Bundchen, who breastfed her baby for three weeks, told the magazine, “Some people here (in the U.S.) think they don’t have to breastfeed, and I think, ‘Are you going to give chemical food to your child when they are so little?’”
Once people starting objecting to Bundchen’s declaration, she offered a clarification on her blog saying, in part, “My intention in making a comment about the importance of breastfeeding has nothing to do with the law. It comes from passion and beliefs about children . . . It’s unfortunate that in an interview sometimes things can seem so black and white . . . I understand that everyone has their own experience and opinions and I am not here to judge.” (August 2010)
