Study: Resumes with Parenting Clues Yield Fewer Interviews
The Wall Street Journal's blog "The Juggle,"discussed a different aspect of the New York Times feature story on MomsRising. The blog focused on a forthcoming study that was mentioned in the article from Cornell University which found that mothers who had parenting "clues" on their resumes -- like mentioning their involvement on PTOs, etc. more
MomsRising: Tapping Working Mothers' Angst
The New York Times ran a feature story this past week about a new advocacy group, MomsRising, which, although it has only been around since last May, already has 80,000 members. The group seeks to improve the situation for working moms in America by promoting family-friendly legislation (like paid maternity leave) and work policies (flex-time). more
Re-Defining Success
The Wall Street Journal recently interviewed a manager for International Business Machines Corp., who, after having two children, decided that while she wanted to work part-time, she didn't want to be "marginalized" in her career. "I wasn't willing to pursue an alternate career path if that meant I had to step off the track and start updating spreadsheets for a living," Joyce Bordash said. The Journal detailed her strategy for re-defining success. more
Sick Kids + Parents' Work=Trouble
Boston-based writer Beth Teitell said in a Boston Globe article that if people want to stop having sick kids sent to school and daycare because their working parents can't afford to take the day off, something's got to give, including, "changing the business and social culture and recognizing that sending an infectious child to school helps spread illness to all of us." more
Stuck in the 1950s?
A new essay in The Nation argues that America is in the middle of a "care crisis," and that it's putting immense pressure on working women because government entities and U.S. businesses have failed to enact policies that help families to care for their sick or needy members, and don't offer affordable childcare services. The Washington Post ran a satirical column recently about the stiff competition parents face when trying to secure their children slots in top nursery schools. In order to snag a spot, writer Maral Kibarian Skelsey joked, parents need to know that it's not really about their children, it's about how much the parents can impress the admissions officers. more
Daddy Time Essential for Babies
If fathers don't spend time with their newborns, according to a British study by the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC), the children may face "emotional and behavioral problems," an article in the English newspaper The Guardian reported. more
Parents Make Better Managers
Citing research from Clark University and the Center for Creative Leadership, a story in Forbes made the case that parent who are invested and spend time with their families perform better in the office than non-parents. "In parenting roles you get a chance to do a lot of the same things you do as a manager," one of the study authors, Marian N. Ruderman said. "You get to hone your interpersonal skills. You learn how to develop other people. more
'New-Mom Friendly' Employers?
Saying that the United States is behind other nations when it comes to benefits for new parents, the Detroit News provided an overview of the difficulties parents face once they have children, and explained what some companies are doing to make their workplaces more hospitable to new parents. more
