Mom-in-Chief and Policy Wonk.
by Meredith O'Brien
Michelle Obama’s recent campaigning on behalf of President Barack Obama’s stimulus proposal has raised some eyebrows. The New York Times said her public support for the stimulus package -- including meeting with folks from the Department of Housing and Urban Development to say that the package’s housing provisions could stave off homelessness -- has surprised some observers.
“She went to some great lengths to say she was going to be first mom in chief,” Myra Gutin, a Rider University “scholar of first ladies” told the paper. “I don’t think we ever really imagined her edging toward public policy like this. It’s not like she’s making public policy. But it’s a little less neutral than some of the other things she’s talked about focusing on.” (February 2009)
