Over the River and Through the Woods . . . Here Comes Grandma.
Noting that Marian Robinson, Michelle Obama’s mother, is moving into the White House with the Obama family, the New York Times recently profiled working families with young children who are enlisting the help of grandmothers to help care for the grandkids while mom and dad are at work.
“A recent study by AARP shows that multi-generational households are on the rise, up from 5 million in 2000 to 6.2 million last year, an increase from 4.8 percent of all households to 5.3 percent,” the Times reported. “It’s not always a smooth ride – families being what they are – but it’s still an appealing solution to the work-life conundrum.” (January 2009)
