Federal Breastfeeding Promotion Draws Fire.

While Michelle Obama has been promoting breastfeeding as a means to reduce childhood obesity and the IRS has decided to allow breast pumps to be tax deductible, not everyone’s happy about it.

A congresswoman, who said she breastfed her five children, doesn’t like governmental intrusion into this personal area. “To think that government has to go out and buy my breast pump, you want to talk about nanny state, I think we just got a new definition,” U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann told a national radio talk show host.

Others quoted by the New York Times said that by having the First Lady promote breastfeeding, it puts too much pressure on new moms, some of whom can’t breastfeed either because they physically cannot or their jobs don’t afford them the opportunity to use a breast pump. (February 2011)
