Parents Love Their Kids But Hate Raising Them?
A provocative cover story in New York Magazine recently asked why, when parents say they love their kids, the child-rearing part of the deal seems to be such a big downer, winds up challenging their marriages and making parents feel guilty they aren’t doing enough for their children. “Children may provide unrivaled moments of joy,” wrote Jennifer Senior, “but they also provide unrivaled moments of frustration, tedium, anxiety, heartbreak . . . Loving one’s children and loving the act of parenting are not the same thing.” (July 2010)
