Feng Shui For The Working Mom

Feng Shui is about creating harmonious environments that support you and your family to create the life you desire and deserve. Feng Shui is less about furniture placement than it is about your energy or “chi.”   We don't know that much about  "chi" so for this piece we consulted a true Feng Shui guru, Terumi Leinow.  She has been practicing the art of Feng Shui and Space Clearing for over 21 years.

Terumi says that as a working mom, it’s vital that you manage your energy well. What a challenge when you are juggling being a mom, employee and/or employer, cook, nurse, shopper, cleaner, partner, friend, daughter, chauffeur and more. How often do you find yourself exhausted and stressed from having to fulfill so many roles? Your To Do list must be thirty pages long.

In Feng Shui, clutter is considered stagnant, stuck energy and can contribute to even more stress. When your environment is cluttered and disorganized, you waste time looking for things, are unfocused and can tire easily. Becoming organized is therefore a key factor to help you manage your energy more efficiently.

Apply this basic organizing principle throughout your entire home: A place for everything and everything in its place.  Make sure that every item in your home has a place “to live” to avoid things getting scattered. Get the whole family involved.  Store like things with like. Have a specific place for sports equipment, schoolbooks, toys, shoes, clothes, household items etc. Get a commitment from your kids that things will get returned to their proper place after use.

If you have more things than fit into a space perhaps its time to let go of outdated, unused, outgrown items. Use this as an opportunity to teach children about the value of giving. Create a donation box and engage the children in selecting items for a give away.

Getting organized is not about creating order and systems just for you. It’s focusing your collective chi or energy on what you want as a family. Come to an agreement that becoming organized can help you achieve what you desire and provide a better quality of life for everyone. Engage everyone’s participation to ensure success.

According to Terumi, fun, joy and love are great energy boosters. And better than Starbucks and Red Bull mixed together, a well organized home will also energize you and bring you more calm than you could ever imagine.
