Baby + Cubicle = More Moms in Workplace.
This week's People Magazine highlights parents of babies, 6 months old and under, whose companies encourage them to bring their infants to work with them in an attempt to eliminate new mom turnover.
With over 100 American companies engaging in this practice, the article said that the National Association of Insurance Commissioners in Kansas City has allowed babies in the workplace since 1998. Cathy Weatherford, the CEO of the organization, said that the group has “never had a formal grievance from the 500 staffers – despite babies who have thrown up on papers and bellowed in meetings – and turnover among mothers has dropped significantly. Now, 78 babies later, [Weatherford] says, ‘50 to 60 percent [productivity] is better than having the office vacant for three to four months of maternity leave.’” (July 2008)

Great to see a company truly incorporating family friendly into their work environment and allowing flexibility for working moms. I would be curious to know how non-parents are affected by the distraction of babies in the background.
